Legato Walaza, the actress who plays Zamo on MTV Shuga: Down South, confesses that many of the young girls in her school fell pregnant at 15 and 16.  ‘My cousin was one of them and I saw the stigma which rose from that,’ she says.

Opportunity for African Writers, Directors and Film Critics 2017

The 38th Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), hosted by the Centre for Creative Arts, University of KwaZulu-Natal, with support from Berlinale Talents, is proud to announce the opening of applications for the 10th Talents Durban taking place 14 – 18 July under the theme “Perspectives; Seeing Things Differently”.

This year,Talents Durban opens submissions to African writers and directors with fiction, documentary and hybrid projects in development. Talents Durban will again welcome projects of all media formats such as film, television series, web series and content for mobile platforms. As part of the 10year celebration, this year’s programme is also opened to alumni of Talents Durban, building on sustainable networks and opening doors for collaboration. As before, Talents Durban will host mentorship and hands on training for emerging film critics. The Talent Press programme is a co-operation with FIPRESCI and the Goethe-Institut.

Talents Durban is also excited to include a new discipline in Animation and Visual Effects. The Animation Studio,will be launched as part of the programme to keep Africa at the forefront of current and new cinematic technology. Here, Talents of this discipline can share their ideas with fellow participants and experts, take part in various hands on programmes, excursions, and discuss and improve their aesthetics and mechanics of their own work under the tutelage of renowned mentors and experts.

The Hunt For South Africa’s Greatest Steakhouse

WHO WILL TAKE THE TITLE AS THE WOLFTRAP STEAKHOUSE CHAMPIONSHIPS HUNTS FOR SOUTH AFRICA’S GREATEST STEAKHOUSE

The anticipation among people of South Africa is at its peak as the 20 finalist of the best steakhouse are in and they are set to compete for the national champions for 2016.

Every year the Wolftrap Steakhouse Championship runs a competition to find South Africa’s best steakhouse and this is their fourth year running this game.

The first round has been completed. This was a public voting phase to identify the best steakhouse in South Africa.

The 20 steakhouses are as follows, Cattle Baron, Mossel Bay in Southern Cape, Cattle Baron, Tableview in Western Cape, Havana Grill in Durban, Hillside Tavern, in Pretoria , HQ in Cape Town, Jayz Grill, Pietermaritzburg, Karoo Cattle and Land, Irene, Pretoria, Little Havana, Umhlanga Rocks, Longhorn Steakhouse, Bloemfontein, Milhaus, Kyalami, Midrand, Johannesburg, Milhaus, Olympus, Pretoria, Pioneer’s Butcher and Grill, Hazyview, Mpumalanga, Texas Grill, George, Southern Cape, The Butcher Restaurant, Camps Bay, The Cricketer, East London, The Godfather, Centurion, Pretoria, The Grumpy Griller, George in Southern Cape, The Hussar Grill, Rondebosch, Western Cape, The Local Grill, Parktown North, Johannesburg and Woodstock Grill&Tap in Western Cape.

The Local Grill held the title for two years, which was in 2013 and 2014, whilst Little Havana were last year’s champion.

These steakhouses have made it to the judging round, where a team of expert judges, along with a well-known MasterChef judge, Pete Goffe-Wood will visit the Top 20 to test the field.

According to the judging panel they stated that the steakhouses will not be aware of the visits they will surprise them on the spot.

“The steakhouses don’t know when the judges will arrive and each will be assessed on a score-sheet that is designed to separate the good from the great-looking at the total experience but focusing on the quality of the steak.”

The judges also said that there will be a certain way in which they will choose the best steakhouse and the decision will be made according to the score-sheet as they will look at other things too that accompany the steaks.

“Judges rate the steakhouses according to a wide-ranging, standardised score-sheet which examines all aspects of dining out and encompasses the total experience, but focuses on the quality of the steak and the side dishes that are part of the steak meal.”

The announcement of the new champions will take place at the Awards Ceremony on 21 June, at the current Steakhouse Champion, Little Havana in Umhlanga Rocks.

 


 

Parkade eventing- it’s a thing!

The Musgrave Shopping Centre has created a sustainable economic growth programme through the re-use of existing facilities from the mall.

The centre has repurposed the mall’s parking lot as a hot venue spot and has made quite an impression to masses of people. Affectionately dubbed as “Level 5”, indicating the parking floor, the venue has paved it’s success through the events they’ve hosted.

The Roof Top Night Market is one of the highlight events which brings in large crowds and ultimately creates large publicity and high return on marketing investment.

Marketing manager for Musgrave Shopping Centre, Donald Mclellan said this was an existing opportunity which they chose to utilise.

“A growing trend in the retail industry and in the country is to repurpose things and areas and it makes a lot of business sense for both the mall and companies utilising the untapped space,” he said.

Level 5 has also hosted events such as the uShaka Marine World peagant, which transformed the parkade area into a talent show setting.

Mclellan added that the team dedicated to the venue is always prepared for all sorts of events and transforming the client’s ideas to life.

“The centre management tea has the marketing expertise to work with any events company and suggest an advertising mix which will help in the process of hosting a successful event,” he said.

Seychelles and South African tourism boards sign MoU for better cooperation

Better cooperation and exchanges are expected in the field of tourism between Seychelles and South Africa after the two countries’ respective tourism boards signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the INDABA trade fair last week in Durban.

The MOU was signed on behalf of Seychelles by the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St Ange and Sthembiso Dlamini, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the South African Tourism Board.

 

Several talks and discussions were held between the two bodies in the past year, leading up to the realisation of this agreement which now covers numerous areas of prolific cooperation between them.

In the presence of several representatives of both tourism boards, the agreement was signed and toasted to as both Minister St Ange and Ms Dlamini said they look forward to further strengthen ties and enhance cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement promotes promotional efforts and collaboration in developing the tourism industry of both countries as they seek to: jointly position Seychelles and South Africa as touristic destinations and increase their market profiles as preferred destinations; collaborate on marketing activities, tourism campaigns and travel trade promotions aimed at increasing the market share of both countries; provide access to each other’s pool of marketing intelligence especially to increase the marketing efficiencies of both countries; collaborate on efforts to increase the countries’ exposure in the global market and improve communication between the

two parties in order to foster a closer working relationship.

 

Minister St Ange, who has been instrumental in pushing for such an agreement between the two bodies, reiterated of why he felt ‘Africa should work with Africa’, if the continent is to move forward and be a more attractive product on the international tourist market.

“South Africa has been and remains a strong source market for Seychelles and it is a country with which we share excellent relations. But there are more we can do for each other and this agreement will lead the way to better cooperation and exchanges between the two parties, which will help to position both destinations at a new level on the international tourist market,” he said.

 

Ms Dlamini also spoke of the need to work together in order to develop a common approach to developing the two countries’ tourism plan and strategies.

“Collaboration is central to all we eandevour to do as SA Tourism to grow and support the tourism industry in the country, and on the continent. We are very excited that our initial discussions with the Seychelles have borne fruit in the form of this MOU. We are looking forward to future engagement to realise our shared vision of taking our destinations to new levels of success.”

LIV Celebrates 5 Years Of Transformation

On June the 5th 2015 LIV celebrates the birth of a vision: to Rescue a child, Restore a life, Raise a leader and Release a star. This core vision is responsible for the transformation of the lives of more than 150 orphaned and vulnerable children. We have events from the 5-7th of June 2015.

Tich Smit, the Founder of LIV village set a precedence with the initial April 7 2010 banquet, addressing 4000 distinguished guests at the International Convention Centre (ICC). Five years ago he took to the podium to impart the vision which God had planted in him, a vision which would see 96 homes, Health Care Centre, a School with 25 classrooms, an ECD Centre, sports fields, a Business Centre and vegetable gardens grow into a lived experience. As with this year’s banquet, the main speakers were Dr. Zweli Mkhize, Rory Dyer and Tich Smit. Tremendous transformation of lives and growth has been achieved by LIV since its inception stage, thus celebrations are in order. This year’s banquet is however soldout.

Retrospectively speaking, the beginning consisted of a broken down chicken farm in the Cottonlands area of Ndwedwe, a concept drawing of a village with 150 homes for 1 000 children,  a school, clinic, church hall, vegetable crops and Business Centre, and unfortunately no money left to build even one house. The village remains under construction, as evident, with the objective of incorporating government, business and the church in a goal-orientated relationship. Many lives have been transformed through the existence of the village and many more are to be transformed. The impending celebrations are of God’s transforming powers and his supernatural provision.

LIV Missions Conference

From 1- 4pm on Friday afternoon, at the LIV school hall, we are hosting a missions conference for anyone who is interested to learn how to, more actively, be the hands and feet of Jesus with the focus on the great commission for the church to take care of the orphaned and vulnerable children of our nation and beyond.

We encourage Church leaders, in particular, to come and hear, and to bring members who want to be equipped. Also, this is for leaders to hear how to motivate your congregations to respond to the cry of the Father for His children.

Our speakers for this conference include:

Bob Johnson of Bob and Kimberley Johnson Ministries (see full bio) who are based at Bethel Church, California, and who have worked with orphanages in many parts of the world (Bob is the brother of Bill Johnson who heads up Bethel church). Bob and Kimberley visited LIV last year and took the unique model back with them to Redding, California, where they are building a village there.  They speak at many churches globally and their passion is for there to be no orphaned or vulnerable child in the world by encouraging churches, and more importantly, Christians within the churches to play a role in the caring of every orphan.

Stephen Lungu (see full bio) who is a great inspiration and demonstration of nothing being impossible for God, as He took a street child turned gang leader out of a life of crime in Zimbabwe, at the age of 20, taught him 11 languages, having had no education or social skills, and used him globally to share his testimony including at Buckingham Palace and the White House. Stephen is one of the leaders in Africa Enterprise and God is using him mightily to bring hope to the hopeless and to show them that they have a Father in heaven who loves them.

Tich Smith, ex-businessman, Founder and CEO of LIV, will be sharing his journey/experiences and how God uses just ordinary people who are available for Him, and does the extraordinary including bringing government, business and the church together.

Louis Els who leads Victory Christian Church in Jeffreys Bay, and works with many church leaders under the Church of the Nations banner, will share on all they are doing as a church, including a babies drop-off Centre, 4 foster homes, outreaches into the surrounding communities, and the largest Gap Year and Bible college in South Africa.

There will be time for questions and answers and to interact further with these men who have walked and are walking the narrow road.  (Entrance is free but an offering will be taken as each one gives as they are able).  It is also important to book seats as numbers are limited!

Between 4 and 5.30pm there will be tours of the village and interaction time with the LIV children.

Worship Celebration

This will follow, in the main hall, from 5.45pm with an evening of celebration and heavenly worship, and includes the youth from the various churches around KZN.  We encourage all church leaders to bring your Friday youth as well as adults. Imagine a hall with 2 000 people worshipping and celebrating.  Bob Johnson will be sharing.  Don’t miss it!  (Entrance is free but there will be an offering time for each one to give as they are able).  Again, please RSVP as you will need an access code to enter the Village.

LIV Family Open Day and market

Saturday 6th will be a day of fun for all. On sale will be LIV fresh veggies, craft items, LIV clothing, and refreshments. If moms are attending the Women of Worth, Fathers are encouraged to come along and bring the children to participate in the organized sports events on the sports field.  This event is free of charge however donations of school supplies and sports equipment is welcome.

Women of Worth Celebration will be from 9am – 12pm on 6th June, where they will be treated to a Lavish Tea Party, as well as a special presentation by the LIV mothers and LIV teenage girls.  Dress code: Extravagant (prize for best dressed).

Included will be a panel discussion with Bob Johnson’s wife, Kimberley, who is the other half of their international ministry, Ann Moodley who heads up the department of Social services at LIV and the recruitment and training of the mothers, as well as the spiritual oversight of the Village, Rachael Lungu, wife of ex-gangster, Stephen Lungu, who will share her testimony, and Joan Smith, Co- founder of LIV village and who is involved with the operations at the Village.

Come and hear how they are changing the lives of many women and children.

The cost for this event is R100 per person / R1 000 per table of 10.

This will be followed by an interview and question time (at 1pm) with Bob Johnson, Stephen Lungu and Tich Smith and will include all the fathers (who by now will be exhausted!) and the children.

Whisky Live Festival, the organisers of the popular Whisky Live Festival and Showroom tasting events, have announced that three Showrooms will be held in South Africa in 2015. The Showrooms will take place in Durban on 24 and 25 April 2015, in Pretoria on 14 and 15 May 2015 and in Cape Town from 18 – 20 June 2015.
