Events in The Midlands, Art Competition, Damon Beard helps out and more

Who says Women’s Day is only for the ladies?  The Highland Games, sponsored by Scotch whisky brand, Scottish Leader, is taking advantage of the holiday to stage a family event at Michaelhouse in Balgowan in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, on Saturday, August 9, 2014.

Organiser, Brendan Gealy says the Highland Games have become an annual Midlands highlight. “They are emblematic of Scotland, along with the kilt, whisky, haggis, bagpipes and Scottish dancing. We’ve taken some of the traditional activities and incorporated them into our more contemporary version. For sure, we’ll be tossing-the-caber (75kg), carrying-the-weight (74kg) and running a shot put (26kgs) contest. There will also be a tug o’ war and a kilted mile race through the veld.

“We will have six military teams competing, and six civilian teams. A number of local pipe bands will perform throughout the day with a massed pipes and drums display reserved for the official opening at 12:00. We’ll be having traditional dancing, music and an exhibition featuring local artists. A large selection of delicious food options will also be on offer, as will a full bar stocked with Scottish Leader and wines from the Distell portfolio.

“Children will be well catered for with a jungle gym, jumping castle, a Slush Puppy stand and an ice cream stall,” Grealy adds.

Taygan Govinden, Scottish Leader’s SA marketing manager, says: “Scottish Leader, a masterful blend of up to 30 of the finest Scotch whiskies – 25 single malt and five grain whiskies – is honoured to be the headline sponsor for the Highland Games. They amplify the long-standing traditions that the brand stands for, and gives us the opportunity to showcase our award-winning, lightly peated whisky with its sweetish, honey-rich taste on the palate.

“Our own “Mr Whisky”, Pierre Meintjes, will be presenting two VIP tastings of Scottish Leader at the event.  He has been involved with Scotch whiskies for more than 40 years and is one of just 159 Masters of the Quaich (pronounced Quake) in the world.  This title is conferred by the Keepers of the Quaich and is given only to those recognised for their contribution to the Scotch whisky industry. He is one of only two South Africans to have been honoured in this way.”

Tickets to attend the Highland Games at Michaelhouse cost R60 for adults, and R25 for scholars and pensioners. These can be purchased at the gates that open at 08:30. Secure parking will be available.

In the spirit of National Women’s’ Day, get the girls together and celebrate in fashionable style: pop the bubbly!  But note… in an era where only the best will do, your bubbly of choice should be none other than the Italian stallion of sparkling – PROSECCO!

Popping a bottle of bubbly at a social gathering is like having a social ‘trump card,’ a charming symbol of ‘cool’ that instantly transforms the event into a fabulous celebration.  Prosecco is the ultimate cool, a sparkling white wine made from Italian Glera grapes.

Prosecco, like Champagne, has become a loosely coined term.  The real McCoy is Prosecco DOC, genuinely produced in ‘Prosecco country’ in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy. Mention this fact at a party and watch your social status fast track!

“Where can you get your beautifully manicured hands on these magnificent bubbles?” I hear you ask.  None other than the chic establishment, Remo’s Fratelli.  Very mention of the word Prosecco and the eyes of your Remo’s bartender will light up.  Best of all, Remo’s Fratelli, well known for its two *Durban restaurants and delis, is now open in **Johannesburg.  So get the girls together and reserve your table now!

Remo’s offers a range of heavenly bubbles – Prosecco DOC Brut and Rosé Brut Spumante from Trevisol and Prosecco Extra Dry from Tenuta San Giorgio.  Also available at Remo’s, the dinky 200ml Villa Cornaro Prosecco Brut makes the perfect party accessory.  Buy a couple bottles for home or create an extra special gift from Remo’s deli, the deli Signora will beautifully wrap your bubbly, adding a red ribbon tied in a bow as a finishing touch.

*Remo’s Originale is a beautiful day time dining venue in Mount Edgecombe, Durban.  Bookings can be made at 031 539 5955.

Remo’s Villaggio is situated in the heart of the Umhlanga Village. This beautiful restaurant and deli is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Reserve your table at 031 561 7143.

**New Remo’s Maximilliano has opened in Waterfall Corner Centre in Sunninghill on Johannesburg’s Midrand.  Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this store has an in-house artisanal bakery and luxury deli well worth the visit.  Book your table at 010 007 6199.

A R30 000 helping hand for a PMB old age home.

Residents of Sunnyside Park Home in PMB received a helping hand of R30 000.  Their plight was brought to the attention of East Coast Radio’s Damon Beard.   He was heartbroken.  He mobilised his Big Favour team and The Nappy Factory donated R20 000 worth of adult diapers.  Boxer Superstores handed over R11 000 worth of toiletries.

Boxer Superstores will also be arranging a Xmas Party for them in December.

Smiles all around.
