Mobile Web Africa Is Coming

Mobile Web Africa returns to Johannesburg and promises to drive progress and raise the bar again

Mobile Web Africa is returning to South Africa in a few weeks’ time. The organisers, All Amber, have announced numerous new measures, key partnerships and organised a superb venue, all of which support the objective of setting a new standard of excellence for technology conferences on the continent. Mobile Web Africa will be held on 10 and 11 September at the spectacular Randlords in Johannesburg.

In October 2009 Mobile Web Africa first cemented its position in the then relatively undeveloped conference market in South Africa. Five years on, and All Amber founder Matthew Dawes is keenly aware of the need to deliver an exceptional conference experience.

“It’s remarkable looking back five years to when Mobile Web Africa was first launched. The events industry in SA has developed massively since we put together that event. For me, it’s important to see that my objective back in 2009 to facilitate the growth of the mobile data, services and products industry across the continent has come to fruition. I hope that the 15 events All Amber has organised across Sub-Saharan Africa have contributed to that growth. Mobile Web Africa 2014 is all about showing the progress the region has made,” says Dawes.

“Bringing Tomi Ahonen back to Jo’burg is a massive plus for the conference. He’s a global mobile industry rockstar and will be delivering material looking at the next stage of growth. The range and breadth of the contributors is outstanding. We have confirmed individuals such as Gustav Praekelt, Emma Kaye and Chika Nwobi (who is coming in from Lagos specifically for the event); Robert Lamptey from Saya in Ghana is an incredible presenter; Nanjira Sambuli from the iHub in Nairobi is going to discuss ICT4D and innovation; and then you’ve got market leading organisations including Standard Bank, Junk Mail, KPMG, Mahindra Comviva, Yahoo! and Deloitte.

For Thursday lunch we’ve brought together Intel, AppCircus and Mobile Monday South Africa for a mobile app competition. Africa’s leading app developer will win the chance to represent the continent on the world stage at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.  Intel is also generously providing complimentary tickets for 10 leading start-ups and developers.  Another feature that we introduced at our 2014 events in Kenya and Nigeria is the “Leaders of Mobile” keynote session. This will be brought to the Johannesburg event, and will kick-start the conference and tackle the core issues that need discussion to enable further progress.”

In addition, Mobile Web Africa will be hosting the inaugural Standard Bank MMA SMARTIES™ Awards on the evening of 10 September. This will be an evening highlighting the work that is leading the industry in taking mobile marketing to the next level, and represents an ideal collaboration.

Year-on-year the event has delivered crucial business development opportunities and Randlords is the perfect environment for Mobile Web Africa 2014. Attendees will receive table service during sessions so that the market leading organisations and the current and future industry leaders are able to focus entirely on the matter at hand: developing the industry even further.

The Mobile Web Africa 2014 agenda is available to view online at the event website: As is normally the case with All Amber conferences, it has been split into eight distinct sessions over two days. Sessions include: The leaders of mobile; thought leader interview and address; the landscape for digital entrepreneurs across Sub-Saharan Africa; driving thought leadership in mobile marketing; the debate around the future of mobile money; smart cities and smart living; mobile content, users & consumption; and showcase presentations.

About Mobile Web Africa

Back in 2009, there simply weren’t many conferences in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially ones that focused purely on mobile data, products and services. When you combine the prevalence of the mobile handset with the extraordinary potential of the web and apps then what you’ve got is a game changer.

Since 2009 Mobile Web Africa, and its sister events Mobile West Africa and Mobile East Africa, have become the leading mobile technology, business-to- business, conferences on the continent. The conference brings together the best brains in the African mobile ecosystem.

Events in The Midlands, Art Competition, Damon Beard helps out and more

Who says Women’s Day is only for the ladies?  The Highland Games, sponsored by Scotch whisky brand, Scottish Leader, is taking advantage of the holiday to stage a family event at Michaelhouse in Balgowan in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, on Saturday, August 9, 2014.

Organiser, Brendan Gealy says the Highland Games have become an annual Midlands highlight. “They are emblematic of Scotland, along with the kilt, whisky, haggis, bagpipes and Scottish dancing. We’ve taken some of the traditional activities and incorporated them into our more contemporary version. For sure, we’ll be tossing-the-caber (75kg), carrying-the-weight (74kg) and running a shot put (26kgs) contest. There will also be a tug o’ war and a kilted mile race through the veld.

“We will have six military teams competing, and six civilian teams. A number of local pipe bands will perform throughout the day with a massed pipes and drums display reserved for the official opening at 12:00. We’ll be having traditional dancing, music and an exhibition featuring local artists. A large selection of delicious food options will also be on offer, as will a full bar stocked with Scottish Leader and wines from the Distell portfolio.

“Children will be well catered for with a jungle gym, jumping castle, a Slush Puppy stand and an ice cream stall,” Grealy adds.

Taygan Govinden, Scottish Leader’s SA marketing manager, says: “Scottish Leader, a masterful blend of up to 30 of the finest Scotch whiskies – 25 single malt and five grain whiskies – is honoured to be the headline sponsor for the Highland Games. They amplify the long-standing traditions that the brand stands for, and gives us the opportunity to showcase our award-winning, lightly peated whisky with its sweetish, honey-rich taste on the palate.

“Our own “Mr Whisky”, Pierre Meintjes, will be presenting two VIP tastings of Scottish Leader at the event.  He has been involved with Scotch whiskies for more than 40 years and is one of just 159 Masters of the Quaich (pronounced Quake) in the world.  This title is conferred by the Keepers of the Quaich and is given only to those recognised for their contribution to the Scotch whisky industry. He is one of only two South Africans to have been honoured in this way.”

Tickets to attend the Highland Games at Michaelhouse cost R60 for adults, and R25 for scholars and pensioners. These can be purchased at the gates that open at 08:30. Secure parking will be available.

In the spirit of National Women’s’ Day, get the girls together and celebrate in fashionable style: pop the bubbly!  But note… in an era where only the best will do, your bubbly of choice should be none other than the Italian stallion of sparkling – PROSECCO!

Popping a bottle of bubbly at a social gathering is like having a social ‘trump card,’ a charming symbol of ‘cool’ that instantly transforms the event into a fabulous celebration.  Prosecco is the ultimate cool, a sparkling white wine made from Italian Glera grapes.

Prosecco, like Champagne, has become a loosely coined term.  The real McCoy is Prosecco DOC, genuinely produced in ‘Prosecco country’ in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy. Mention this fact at a party and watch your social status fast track!

“Where can you get your beautifully manicured hands on these magnificent bubbles?” I hear you ask.  None other than the chic establishment, Remo’s Fratelli.  Very mention of the word Prosecco and the eyes of your Remo’s bartender will light up.  Best of all, Remo’s Fratelli, well known for its two *Durban restaurants and delis, is now open in **Johannesburg.  So get the girls together and reserve your table now!

Remo’s offers a range of heavenly bubbles – Prosecco DOC Brut and Rosé Brut Spumante from Trevisol and Prosecco Extra Dry from Tenuta San Giorgio.  Also available at Remo’s, the dinky 200ml Villa Cornaro Prosecco Brut makes the perfect party accessory.  Buy a couple bottles for home or create an extra special gift from Remo’s deli, the deli Signora will beautifully wrap your bubbly, adding a red ribbon tied in a bow as a finishing touch.

*Remo’s Originale is a beautiful day time dining venue in Mount Edgecombe, Durban.  Bookings can be made at 031 539 5955.

Remo’s Villaggio is situated in the heart of the Umhlanga Village. This beautiful restaurant and deli is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Reserve your table at 031 561 7143.

**New Remo’s Maximilliano has opened in Waterfall Corner Centre in Sunninghill on Johannesburg’s Midrand.  Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this store has an in-house artisanal bakery and luxury deli well worth the visit.  Book your table at 010 007 6199.

A R30 000 helping hand for a PMB old age home.

Residents of Sunnyside Park Home in PMB received a helping hand of R30 000.  Their plight was brought to the attention of East Coast Radio’s Damon Beard.   He was heartbroken.  He mobilised his Big Favour team and The Nappy Factory donated R20 000 worth of adult diapers.  Boxer Superstores handed over R11 000 worth of toiletries.

Boxer Superstores will also be arranging a Xmas Party for them in December.

Smiles all around.
